1. What inspired you to create LOM?
Having worked in creative advertising for hundreds of clients over the years, I have always wanted to create my own brand. My criteria for the brand-to-be was that it had to be innovative, purpose-driven, and commercially viable. I learned about cactus ‘leather’ via industry news in 2019 and became interested in sustainable material innovation and its application. At the time, only one other Australian label that was using next-gen leather alternatives, so I decided to take the plunge in developing my own responsibly made range of plant-based handbags.
2. What is special about cactus/apple leather?
Our ethos at LOM is ‘for a better-looking plant’. We aim to create beautiful products that make you look and feel good knowing you’re treading lightly on the planet. Cactus is a highly regenerative plant that sequesters large amounts of carbon, uses zero irrigation, and is organically grown in its native area of Mexico. The process to create cactus leather is carbon negative, the material is globally awarded and is REACH compliant, Oeko-Tex Standard 100, and USDA Organic.
The apple leather we use is made in Italy from the cores and peels of apples that would otherwise go to waste. It has a waterborne PU coating meaning it does not contain toxic organic solvents. It is a certified USDA Biobased product, also certified by REACH, and Italian body Veganok as an ethical vegan material.
